Enrollment numbers in the Robbinsdale School district tell a story. In the 1960's - 1970's our district had 28.000 students during those peak years. Some factors play a role in the decline in student numbers.
Declining population
Growth of western suburbs (Robbinsdale district not geographically expanding)
Growth of private school options
Open enrollment options, including home schooling
I am sure there are others I have not named
Enrollment number pay the bills and the loss of students impacts the bottom line of the budget. Additionally, the district had too much building capacity. Meaning that elementary schools meant to house 425 students had only 200 students. Efficiency lacks when two elementary schools are kept in operations when if combined, one building should close. It cost $1.3 millioin to turn on the lights in an elementary school, so closing an underutilized school, saves $1.3 million in the budget.
But cutting the budget was not the only issue, our school buildings are failing and do not support the today's learning environments and student needs. We can fix all of that with a passed bond referendum.
As a current School Board member, I voted "YES" to put a referendum in front of the voters.
Maintenance has been deferred too long. We need to right size our schools to maximize efficiency, support our students, realize savings, and become a desired district for families.
